The Help tab is one place where you can find documentation of how to do various things in WITS. It is the last blue tab at the top of the WITS window. Click on it, then click on a topic on the left to find out how to do various things in WITS. Also check out “What’s New” in the left column of the main page. New features are “featured” here.

A Dell left unattended and logged in is a security risk – anyone who sits at the computer has access to a lot of confidential information. If you are going to be away from your computer for a few minutes and cannot monitor it, simply press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click Lock Computer. When you return, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete again, login, and you are right back where you left off. Remember that if you lock the computer (instead of logging off), you are the only one who can unlock it.

On Dells, your printers “travel” with you in your profile, regardless of which Dell you login to. For example, if you normally print to the A-wing, but login in and print in the D-wing, your printing will still come out in the A-wing unless you change your printer. This is true if you are at another building also, and print without changing your printer – your documents will still come out here at Heim.

On a Dell, My Documents on the desktop is not your real server folder on the network. When you open My Documents, you see all the documents in your server folder, but they are really only shortcuts. Your “true” server folder is found by double-clicking My Computer, and then double-clicking “username” on ‘all\staff\heimmiddle’. Why does this matter? There are occasional times where documents do not behave as you expect if you try to open or save via My Documents. To be safe, always open or save documents via My Computer -> ‘username” on all\staff\heimmiddle.

On the WITS homepage there is a link in the left navigation column for the Staff Directory. This is the electronic version of the printed book we receive each year. The two big advantages of the online version are that you can get to it from any computer with an internet connection (so when you are at home and the book is at school or vice versa…), and it reflects anyone’s changes of phone or address that are made during the course of the year.

Why walk all the way to the library to search the catalog? We have made a connection to the library database that allows you to access the catalog from any computer in the building. Here’s how to find it:
In WITS, click the blue Links tab at the top of the window
Click the Library Online Catalog and Databaseslink
Click the Heim Middle Library Online Catalog link

All staff and students have access to this through WITS. Currently this only works while in school – if you try from home, the link to the catalog will not work. We are hoping to have home access to the catalog at some point in the future.

If you are in the market for a new computer at home, you have access to educator’s prices for being affiliated with a school. For Dell computers, the district has a special code (and website) with the employee purchase program. See someone in the computer lab for the necessary info. For Apple computers, simply identify yourself as an educator at the Apple Store (online or in the mall) to get the discounted prices.

To see current (or past) PTSA newsletters, other information for parents, or recent work done by our students, these are the places to find them.

Google has added a new service to its map feature which has satellite images of the mapped location. Type in an address, click on the satellite link, and you get a bird’s eye view, with decent zoom and resolution.
Go to http://maps.google.com
type in the address and click search
when the normal map shows up, look to the upper right of the screen for a link that reads satellite
there you are!
Big brother really is watching…
PS The satellite images can be up to 5 or 6 years old. If you check out Heim, you can tell how it is at least a 3 year old picture.
