  • Security tip

    Tuesday’s Technology Tip
(Little bits of information to hopefully make your computing life easier)

A Dell left unattended and logged in is a security risk – anyone who sits at the computer has access to a lot of confidential information. If you are going to be away from your computer for a few minutes and cannot monitor it, simply press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click Lock Computer. When you return, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete again, login, and you are right back where you left off. Remember that if you lock the computer (instead of logging off), you are the only one who can unlock it.

  • Printer tip

    Tuesday’s Technology Tip
(Little bits of information to hopefully make your computing life easier)

On Dells, your printers “travel” with you in your profile, regardless of which Dell you login to. For example, if you normally print to the A-wing, but login in and print in the D-wing, your printing will still come out in the A-wing unless you change your printer. This is true if you are at another building also, and print without changing your printer – your documents will still come out here at Heim.

  • WITS from Home

Don’t forget – if you want to get access to WITS from home – put in the following address: wits.williamsvillek12.org (there is not www in the address). If you have the correct address typed in, you should see a box to enter your username and password. There is also a link to WITS on the left hand side of this page under links.

  • Server Folder tip

    Tuesday’s Technology Tip
(Little bits of information to hopefully make your computing life easier)

On a Dell, My Documents on the desktop is not your real server folder on the network. When you open My Documents, you see all the documents in your server folder, but they are really only shortcuts. Your “true” server folder is found by double-clicking My Computer, and then double-clicking “username” on ‘all\staff\heimmiddle’. Why does this matter? There are occasional times where documents do not behave as you expect if you try to open or save via My Documents. To be safe, always open or save documents via My Computer -> ‘username” on all\staff\heimmiddle.

  • And away we go…

So we opened today for business, and within the first couple of hours, we were full to the brim! Not so bad – the 5th day of school and we are getting close to being ready across the board (meaning mobile labs, equipment,etc.). Next year, maybe by day 3…

  • Lab Opens Tuesday

The Computer Lab opens for business on Tuesday 9/13. The lab opens at 8am every day. Students can come in early to work without signing up in advance – just come in. During the day, students can use the lab during studyhall or other classs as long as there is room. Students should ask their teacher to call the lab to check if there is room prior to coming down.

  • Password Changes

It is time for student passwords to change. PLEASE portect your password even more carefully than your locker combination. Do not share it with anyone, and if you ever think someone knows it, ask a staff member in the computer lab to help you change it. Also remember that you should use a password that is not easy for someone to figure out.

  • Up & Running

The second inservice went very well last week (a “cold water” event for those folks as well – see previous entry). Now here we are the day before school starts, and we are ready to go. With all the new equipment that has come in, we will have quite a bit of shuffling and organizing over the next few days, but we are in good shape.

We are going to do some neat learning with technology this year!
